Seven-day self-defence programme for women to be held at PU

The training programme was inaugurated today by the R S Ghuman,SP (operations).

Following rising cases of eve teasing and other crime against women in the city the department of social work,Panjab University,in association with the Chandigarh Police,is going to begin a seven-day training programme to teach self-defence techniques to girls.

The training programme was inaugurated today by the R S Ghuman,SP (operations). Other guests present on the occasions included Kalpana Mahajan,Dean Student Welfare (women),Pam Rajput, a social worker as well as the other officials of the university as well as the Chandigarh Police.

A demonstration was presented by the ladies constables in which various self-defence techniques of judo,karate and martial arts were displayed. A skit on the theme of self-defence was also presented by students.

The training programme will commence from Sunday and will continue till March 31. During the session the girls will be taught unarmed combat techniques.

“We will also focus on the psychology of what goes in the mind of the the person attacking them and how to identify his weakness and them respond accordingly. They will also be informed about sensitive points of the body like the temple,nose etc. which should be attacked,” said Jagjit Singh,a constable as well as the police coordinator of the event.

Till date over 150 girls from the university as well as other colleges of the city have registered for the training programme.
