The senator group led by G K Chatrath has pointed out that the authority for issuing circulars regarding change of faculties lies only with the PU syndicate.

A group of Panjab University (PU) senators on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor and the registrar, objecting to the V-C’s circular which maintains that request for change of faculties be sent latest by March 22.

The senator group led by G K Chatrath has pointed out that the authority for issuing circulars regarding change of faculties lies only with the PU syndicate and the V-C is not authorised “to exercise the power vested by the syndicate”. “Request received on the basis of this letter can neither be placed before the syndicate nor the same will be considered. Please withdraw this letter immediately,” reads the memorandum.

The memorandum has also objected to the reference of previous practice of 2004 and 2008 syndicate decision,in the letter, where the V-C had exercised the power. “Practice cannot be treated as law.”

The senators have alleged that by stating that “after March 22 no request for change of faculty or faculties would be entertained”,the authorities are attempting to interfere in the senate elections scheduled to be held in September this year. Chatrath is a senior senator and Dean Faculty of Law.
