The murder took place early on Saturday morning when Gurdial Singh (60) was on duty at the Pepsi warehouse and friend Sucha Singh (50) at a groundnut factory on the opposite road,the police said.

According to preliminary investigations,the two were battered with stones and bricks in the forest area near the road. Subsequently,their bodies were dragged to the bridge on the road to dispose them of.

The accused threw the body of Sucha in a nullah and Gurdial’s body was abandoned on the road above it. The police control room received a call around 6 am after passers-by noticed Gurdial’s body.

According to an eyewitness,Gurdial’s face was smashed with a stone and he was lying in a pool of blood. He had injuries on his head,face and lower body.

Later,the police found Sucha’s body in the nullah.

According to the police,blood was found spattered at several places near the bridge,suggesting that the murder took place elsewhere. A team of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) examined the spot and collected samples.

Gurdial lived in Vikas Nagar and Sucha in Mauli Jagran. Gurdial is survived by his wife and two sons and Sucha by his wife and a son.

Thieves’ accomplices behind the murders?
The victims were killed three days after they had helped the police nab two thieves in the forest area near Daria village. The accused were allegedly stealing water pipes.

On Sucha’s tip-off,Rattan Kumar Yadav and Manoj Sharma were caught red-handed while stealing water pipes from the forest area. An FIR was registered in the Industrial police station on April 26 in the matter.

On April 23,they had helped the police arrest another thief. Gurdial had informed the police about Pishambar,who was allegedly stealing electricity wires in the area. At present,the accused are in judicial custody.

The police suspect that the accomplices of the thieves were behind the murders. The crime seems to have been committed by at least four persons who wanted to take revenge,a police officer said.

“It seems to be the handiwork of associates of the criminals arrested for stealing water pipes on the victims’ complaint. We are investigating,” UT SSP S S Srivastava said.

A case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered in the Industrial Area police station.

Later in the evening,the police detained two suspects for questioning. “We hope to catch the culprits soon,” the SSP said.

‘They paid the price for being informers’
The families of the victims said “they paid the price for being police informers”.

Sucha’s wife Savita Rani said,“He and his friend Gurdial had seen some men stealing pipes in the night and informed the police.”

Gurdial’s wife Bhago said on a phone call on Friday,he was told that he would “have to pay the price for what he did”.

“Till two days ago,he was swelling with pride over helping the police nab the thieves. We didn’t know he would meet this fate,” she said.

Gurdial’s son Jagtar Singh said a few accomplices of the thieves had fled when the police arrested the two thieves. He said the accused arrested were drug addicts.

Body remained in nullah for five hours,as the IGP wanted to ‘see’
The police did not pull out Sucha Singh’s boy from the nullah for over five hours,as Inspector General of Police P K Srivastava had flashed a message that he wanted to see the bodies on the spot. The IGP arrived around 12 pm. Before that,Sucha wife was seen requesting the cops to pull out his body from the dirty water.

After the IGP reached,Sucha’s son,who was wearing surgical gloves since morning,pulled out the body with the help of others,including a few policemen.
