(Express Photo) For more than five decades now, a small joint located at the backend of Sector 17 in Chandigarh has served barbeque chicken that is a complete meal in itself and has no parallel. Berdy’s, the famous barbeque restaurant, was established in the 1970s by Santosh Lal Bhasin.
On a business trip to Australia, he discovered the barbeque concept and decided to bring it as a commercial set-up to Punjab specifically. Over the past 53 years, Berdy’s has seen incomparable success and is one of the most famous non-vegetarian eateries in Chandigarh.
Manish Bhasin, the son of the founder of this restaurant chain, says 120-150 people come every day to eat at Berdy’s. “It is a joy to see the success of this endeavour of my father. This was his dream, and I dream to make it even bigger.”
The restaurant has become a franchise with a new outlet being opened in Leela Bhawan, Patiala Gurdaspur, Kharar, and Dasuya. The plan is to have a presence all over India.
While the menu has chicken varieties, including roasted chicken, honey-glazed boiled chicken burgers, wraps, salads etc., the speciality seems to be the full barbeque chicken.
Mayank Raj, a regular customer, says, “This place has a special spot in the heart of every resident of Chandigarh due to the same taste and quality of chicken over time. I am now 30 years of age, and I have been a regular customer since I was a child. Before that, this was my father’s favourite place.”
The recipe for the chicken and the spices that make it so tender and flavourful has not changed over all these years, and the cooking style remains uncomplicated, adds Bhasin.
For many, this is a healthy, low-calorie meal, which doesn’t need any accompaniments and can be relished on the go, and for many, the space brings back many memories.
