The Vigilance Bureau (VB) made its first arrest in connection with the question paper leak for the recruitment of Sub-Divisional Officers (SDOs) conducted by Panjab University (PU). The person who is arrested is said to be the local link of a gang which is operating in many states. The VB said that more arrests would follow.

A VB source disclosed that they have arrested one Sandeep Singh, a resident of Abohar, after receiving a tip-off that the man was involved in leaking the paper and then distributing it at various places. Recently, the VB booked two candidates who had allegedly leaked the question paper. The case was registered on the complaint of a resident of Kolianwali village in Muktsar district who alleged that his son got an offer from a person who promised him to get an SDO job for Rs 30 lakh.

The complaint was lodged with Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal following which the case was shifted to VB. In the FIR, the VB said that at least 19 candidates had access to the leaked question paper.

The entrance test was held for 682 posts in the department of local government on November 15, 2015. More than 67,000 candidates had taken the test for different posts, including junior engineer (JE), assistant corporation engineer, assistant municipal engineer and sub-divisional engineer (SDE). The FIR also read that the candidates listed as the top 50 on merit had applied to appear in the examinations for the posts of JE and SDE, which were to be conducted on the same day within hours of each other. However, 19 of these 50 candidates appeared only in the SDE examination and remained absent in the JE exam . It was alleged in the FIR that these students allegedly had access to the question paper for the SDE exam and appeared only for that.
