Rs 4.47-lakh work-from-home fraud: Four arrested by Panchkula police

With the arrest of three more accused, four have been arrested by the cybercrime police of Panchkula in a work-from-home cyber fraud case. One accused was earlier arrested in the matter.

According to DCP (Crime) Manpreet Singh Sudan, the case came to light after a Panchkula resident woman lodged a complaint stating that on May 28 this year that she received a work-from-home offer on WhatsApp from an unknown number. She was subsequently added to a Telegram group, where she was lured with promises of high returns on investments. Over time, she was duped of Rs 4.47 lakh through multiple installments.

According to the police, the first breakthrough came on September 16, when the cybercrime team arrested the first accused, identified as Rhythm, a resident of Mauli Jagra, Chandigarh. He was produced in court on September 17 and remanded in five days’ police custody.

During interrogation, crucial leads emerged, enabling the arrest of three more accused on September 20. The three accused were identified as Abhay, a resident of Manimajra, Chandigarh; Anshu, a resident of Sector 29, Panchkula; and Piyush, a resident of Sector 7, Panchkula.

The trio was produced before the court on September 21 and sent to three days’ police remand for further questioning. Meanwhile, Rhythm was sent to judicial custody on September 22.
