Rotarians send relief material to Leh

In an endeavour to help those who have suffered in Leh due to flashfloods,Rotarians of Rotary International District 3080 today airlifted relief material for victims.

In an endeavour to help those who have suffered in Leh due to flashfloods,Rotarians of Rotary International District 3080 today airlifted relief material for victims. The Rotarians of different clubs have contributed and sent 100 tents of UN specifications; over 250 double-sized polywool quilts; 1,000 fur-lined shoes; 300 pressure cookers of three-litre capacity; two truckloads of woollens; and 19 boxes containing shoes and accessories.

Former Rotary International president Rajendra K Saboo said the delegation would also be conducting a need assessment to explore the possibilities of adopting a village to build pucca/temporary houses as well as adoption of orphans to support them in their further education.

Saboo expressed his gratitude to the Indian Air Force authorities for their support to ensure the speedy delivery of goods. District governor Madhukar Malhotra,who heads District 3080 comprising 75 clubs in Chandigarh,and parts of Punjab,Haryana,Himachal Pradesh,Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh was also present at the Air Force Station along with other Rotarians. Rotary International Director- Elect Y P Das informed that these items have been contributed by Rotarians,corporates and other NGOs. A three-member delegation has already reached Leh comprising District Secretary Charanjit Singh; former president of Rotary Club Chandigarh,Arvind Mehan; and current club Secretary of Rotary Club Chandigarh Hasan Mejie,who would ensure that the material reaches the beneficiaries,informed D G Madhukar Malhotra.

“Around 26 pilots,in rotation,and over two dozen of planes were sent initially to Leh. After the situation has recovered,on an average six to seven planes are sent on daily basis for transporting not only relief equipment but also other things,” said Air Commodore Rajeev Sachdeva. Around 500 tonnes of relief equipment including medicines,food,quilts etc have been sent to Leh since August 7 till now. “Along with our three Rotarians who reached Leh on Sunday morning were accompanied by umpteen foreign nationals who have offered to adopt orphans” said Arvind Mahajan,president of Rotary Club of Chandigarh.
