Roads dug up, Mohali residents face bumpy ride in rainy season
An MC official said that the work was allotted last month after following the tendering process.

The dug-up roads in Mohali city are causing inconvenience to people in monsoon. Residents allege negligence by the Municipal Corporation (MC) and Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) which dug up the city in the rainy season on the pretext of either laying drainage lines or repairing roads.
Former councillor Arun Sharma said that the dividing road of sectors 88 and 89 was dug up for constructing a roundabout despite knowing the fact that the monsoon season was arriving.
“If you go there, you can see that water was filled in the pits, posing danger to commuters,” Sharma added.
Ashok Jha, another former councillor of BJP, said: “Is it not strange that many places are dug up during the rainy season?”
Jha said that they will raise the issue with the higher authorities if the dug-up pits are not filled at the earliest. He added that a thorough investigation should be carried out.

BJP’s district president Sanjeev Vashisht said, “It should be thoroughly probed. Water fills up in the dug-up area and if any commuter, especially a two-wheeler rider, falls in it and gets injured, who will be responsible for the incident?”
Ramesh Kumar, a Phase X resident, said that at many places the water flow was stopped due to digging up of roadsides. He added that despite raising the issue, nobody paid attention to it.
Former executive engineer of Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA) N S Kalsi said that due to unplanned elevation of roads, the water flow has stopped and the digging up of roadsides has complicated it.
An MC official said that the work was allotted last month after following the tendering process.
Deputy Mayor Kuljeet Singh Bedi said that the MC was facing issues, so some roads were dug up by GMADA. He admitted that the roads should not be dug up during the monsoon.
No officer of GMADA was available for comment.
