Road mishaps claim 4,000 lives every year: Minister

Road accidents are the biggest killers in the state as they snuff out almost 4,000 lives on an average every year.

Road accidents are the biggest killers in the state as they snuff out almost 4,000 lives on an average every year,said Punjab Transport Minister Master Mohan Lal here today.

He launched the state-level Road Safety Week campaign to spread awareness among the drivers on traffic safety rules. The function was held at Dussehra Ground in Phase VIII.

Taking a dig at political leaders,Lal told them not to approach the officials concerned to seek undue favours for traffic violators. “This promotes traffic violations and in turn demoralise the officials who catch the violators,” he said.

He reminded the bus and truck drivers of ensuring installation of speed governors in their vehicles before March 31,failing which they will be issued heavy challans.

Punjab School Education Board Chairman Dr Dalbir Singh Dhillon announced to introduce a chapter on traffic road safety in the school syllabus from primary level.

Deputy Commissioner Parveen Kumar and SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar,too,spoke on the occasion.

The minister later took a round of an exhibition on speed governors and road safety instruments displayed on the occasion.
