Justice Ritu Bahri to be the acting chief justice of Punjab and Haryana HC

Justice Ritu Bahri was elevated to the esteemed position of Judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court on August 16, 2010.

Justice Ritu Bahri has been appointed as Acting Chief Justice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The present chief justice Ravi Shankar Jha is retiring on October 13.

In a remarkable journey through the legal world, Justice Ritu Bahri, born on October 11, 1962, in Jalandhar, has a lineage deeply rooted in the legal profession, starting with her great-grandfather, the renowned civil lawyer Late Karam Chand Bahri. Her grandfather, Late Shri Som Dutt Bahri, followed in these legal footsteps and was not only a civil lawyer but also served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Punjab from 1952 to 1957.

Continuing this legacy, her father, Justice Amrit Lal Bahri, retired as a Judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court in 1994.

Justice Bahri’s educational journey began at Carmel Convent School in Chandigarh. She graduated with honors in Economics from Government College for Women, Chandigarh, in 1982, achieving a First Division distinction. She pursued her legal studies at Panjab University, Chandigarh, graduating with distinction in 1985.

In 1986, she was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana and initiated her legal practice at the Punjab & Haryana High Court. She was appointed as Assistant Advocate General for Haryana in March 1992. She rose to the position of Deputy Advocate General for Haryana in August 1999 and Senior Advocate General in December 2009.

During her tenure representing the State of Haryana, Justice Bahri handled a wide range of cases, spanning service matters, land acquisition, taxation, revenue, labor disputes, and Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) cases.
