The total number of applicants for Class XI admissions this year has exceeded the number of seats by a margin of about 4,000. City educationists have been expressing concern over the disparity that might leave those with a lesser percentage looking for other options.
The number of applicants are more this year as children from neighbouring areas like Rajpura,Zirakpur,Batala,Pinjore and Kalka also apply here, while there is no policy of preference being given to local students, said Indra Dhingra,Principal of Government Senior Secondary School,Sector 35,Chandigarh.
Educationists feel that the fee for private schools is significantly more than that of government schools and not all students can afford it.
Many students who have applied to government schools are already enrolled in private schools,so they might continue there itself. Those with a lower percentage might have to look for other options, said Anujit Kaur,Principal of Government Senior Secondary School,Sector 16.
As per the trends in the past five-six years, preferred private schools are only a few. Admission process is a period of uncertainty and worry,so hopefully the aim will be to accommodate most students now and maybe have an internal migration later,so that students are relieved that they at least have a seat, said Rakesh Sachdeva,Principal of DAV Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 15.
UT education authorities, however, maintained that the margin was not much and
no one would be left without a seat.
All the students will be accommodated when the list comes out on June 30. There is a slight increase of 15 percent in the initial intake this year and all the applicants will be adjusted in the end, said Ram Kumar,Director Education Officer.
Senior officials said some applicants would automatically be eliminated once the process of admissions began.
Students submit more than one application as they think it will increase their chances of selection and others do not turn up at the time of fee submission. Number of applicants are more every year but, sometimes, seats are even left vacant, said Vinay R Sood,Deputy DEO.
The process of the second round of counselling will begin on July 16.
