When the name of cricketer Jonty Rhodes comes to the mind, images of the South Africans immaculate fielding to get Pakistan’s Inzamam-ul-Haq run-out in the1992 World Cup in Australia takes one back in time. In Chandigarh to launch series of dietary supplement products for the region, the 44-year-old not only spoke on fitness but also on the India-South Africa series,Sachin’s retirement and also on how good is the present Indian cricket team. When asked to comment on the controversy between the Indian and South African cricket boards regarding India’s tour to South Africa,Rhodes, who played 52 Tests and 245 ODIs for his country, said,It is bad that the two boards are in conflict over the series between world’s top sides. I do not know that what is exactly happening between the two boards but it is affecting cricket. The spectators love to watch the Indian team take on South Africa. It is a high-voltage contest.
The tour has been embroiled in a controversy after CSA released the schedule without consulting the BCCI. According to the original schedule released by the CSA,the tour was to have three Tests, seven ODIs and two T20 Internationals. India were to begin the tour with a warm-up game on November 18 and end it with a Test match on January 15.
The BCCI,meanwhile, squeezed in a two-Test series followed by a best-of-three ODI series against the West Indies from November 6-27 at home. Indias tour of New Zealand is scheduled to commence on January 19,leaving only the month of December free for the team to tour to South Africa.
Rhodes has also been attached with the Mumbai Indians team during the IPL and CL T-20 tournaments. Being the fielding coach of the Mumbai team,Rhodes got to spend time with Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who will retire from Test cricket in a match against West Indies in Mumbai in November. Speaking on Sachin,Rhodes felt,It is incredible for someone like Sachin who has been part of international cricket since 1989. He is so passionate about the sport and always takes keen interest in the proceedings. IPL and CL T-20 gave me good chance to see Sachin from close. His commitment to the game is just amazing. During IPL and CL T-20,he would practice so hard in the nets before the matches.
Praising the Dhoni-led Indian ODI and Test teams,Rhodes shared,The present Indian outfits are just too good. Shikhar Dhawan,Virat Kohli and other youngsters are very good. It would be interesting to see them perform against the South African team on South Africa pitches. The impasse over Indias proposed tour to South Africa is likely to end by October 19.
