Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, adopted 15 students from the state on the occasion of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh’s 116th birth anniversary on September 28 (Thursday), under the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Scholarship Scheme.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Sahney announced that he would adopt the following students, and ensure they have adequate funds for higher studies: Gursimran Kaur, an MBBS/MD student in Sri Guru Ram Das Medical College, Amritsar; Kanish Goyal, who is pursuing MBBS from Govt Medical College, Patiala; Kulveer Kaur, a commercial pilot undergoing training in South Africa; Amanjot Kaur, Daljit Kaur, Rajveer Singh and Naveen Kumar, who are pursuing engineering; Jaya Verma and Nitish Kumar, who are architecture students; Bhartpreet Singh, a discus thrower who won a gold medal in the state championship recently; kick boxer Jivanjot Kaur; nursing students Mansi and Priya Kumar; and Simran and Priyanka Atwal, upcoming singers.

The Shaheed Bhagat Singh Scholarship was launched by Sahney last year, with an aim of promoting education and fostering talent in Punjab. The 15 students had approached the MP for financial assistance.

Sahney said he is inspired from ‘Shaheed-E-Azam’ Bhagat Singh, and through his ideas he has learnt that “Investing in the education of our youth is an investment in the future of Punjab and our nation. We aim to empower our brightest minds and provide them with the resources they need to excel academically and professionally.”

Sahney, who does not take any of the perks he is entitled to, said that he donates his entire salary as an MP to this scholarship fund. The chairman of this fund is Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Speaker of Punjab Assembly.
