Quiet Strokes

Here, each one can find what they seek — birds, flowers, clouds, butterflies, trees and the moon.

French artist Martine Le Cam’s work is her way of representing the silence of her native place — Massif des Maures

Here, each one can find what they seek — birds, flowers, clouds, butterflies, trees and the moon. So an intense engagement becomes unavoidable as one goes through the 72 canvases at French artist Martine Le Cam’s exhibition “Beyond The Borders”.

Cam’s works, rich in colour contrasts, mostly depict nature in the abstract. In her series “White River”,the moods of water come to the forefront, while in “Rose and Wind”,hazy images of flowers and trees are wrapped in a swirl of wind. Circles form an integral part of many of her paintings — to depict the moon, the earth, seeds of flowers, bubbles and even a pearl in an oyster.

Each of her abstract works is done in Chinese ink and through these, she intends to reflect the spirit of her region — Massif des Maures. And as she says,it’s also her way of representing meditation and silence. “I have lived in Golfe of Saint-Tropez all my life and so,the place along with the hills of Massif des Maures, where I go for solitary walks and meditation, has been my muse,” says the painter, who is also a poet and a creative guide at literary workshops.

The section that stands apart in the show is “Between you and Me” as most of the paintings have been completed in Chandigarh. “In these works,I have portrayed India and France as I see it. I have tried to capture the silence and mysticism of both countries,” says Cam,adding that all her works are a tribute to her maternal grandfather,Maurice Vogt,a renowned French artist.

Cam has also written a book called Frere Antoine, about a monk who has been living in a cave in Massif des Maures for the last 45 years. While her painting exhibition is on at Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi,Sector 16,till September 7,Cam will host a slideshow based on her book at Alliance Française,Sector 36,on September 13 and will recite her poems on September 21.
