Punjabi film bags jury award at Abu Dhabi fest

Gurvinder Singh’s Anhey Ghore da daan (Alms for a Blind Horse) won a Special Jury award at the 5th Abu Dhabi Film Festival that concluded recently.

Gurvinder Singh’s Anhey Ghore da daan (Alms for a Blind Horse) won a Special Jury award at the 5th Abu Dhabi Film Festival that concluded recently. Produced by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC),the Punjabi film — based on the novel by Jananpeeth Award winner Gurdial Singh — received the Black Pearl trophy with with a cash prize of $50,000.

While honouring the film,the jury citation read: “For its visual style and a poetic journey indicating a new and intriguing voice to emerge from the cinematic landscape of India.”

The film,had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in September,has since then been screened at the Busan International Film Festival,Abu Dhabi Film Festival and London Film Festival. Screenings are due in November at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival and the South Asian International Film Festival in New York,where it will have its US premiere. It is also due to be shown at the Tromso International Film Festival in Norway in January.

Samual John,well-known theatre personality,who has acted in the film,said: “It is a moment of pride for all of us. It is not common in the Punjabi film scenario that a film gets this kind of recognition. This film is a labour of love and has enjoyed a lot of special moments from day one — after a long time a Punjabi film based on a novel was being made,then majority of the people who have worked in film are non actors.”
