The Sangrur district administration in Punjab Tuesday said it has sanctioned Rs 4.07 crore to promote horticulture in Sangrur and neighbouring Malerkotla districts. Notably, the Malerkotla district was carved out of the undivided Sangrur district a couple of years ago.
Additional deputy commissioner (development) Varjeet Walia, during a meeting of the District Management Mission Committee, said farmers will be encouraged to plant trees through financial assistance under the National Horticulture Mission Scheme.
Walia said that after analysing the statistics of horticulture in Sangrur district, it was clear that the trend of farmers adopting “this subsidiary occupation” has increased significantly due to the continuous efforts of the Punjab government to promote crop diversification.
He said that providing a self-dependent environment to the farmers was their main objective and horticulture has huge potential to increase income.
The additional deputy commissioner further said the officials concerned have been directed to promote guava, kinnow, strawberry, peach as well as flowers, net house, plastic mulching, low tunnel, poly house and high-quality vegetables, beekeeping, mushroom production units, mushroom spawn lab, hybrid seeds and seed infrastructure unit, onion storage, and vermicompost, among others.
The deputy director of the horticulture department, Dr Nirwant Singh, said any farmer can apply for financial assistance under the National Horticulture Mission Scheme by contacting the block office or district office of the department.
