The ongoing pre-monsoon period (June) has brought alarming news for Punjab and Haryana as both states are grappling with significant pre-monsoon rainfall deficits. According to reports, Punjab witnessed a staggering 72% less rainfall, while Haryana faced a shortfall of 77%. Chandigarh, too, experienced a severe deficit of 92% during this crucial period.

This shortage of rainfall spells trouble for the agricultural sector, especially since Punjab and Haryana collectively cultivate around 45 lakh hectares of land for paddy and basmati crops. The pre-monsoon period is also crucial for transplanting and paddy sowing. With canal water covering only 21% of these agricultural lands in Punjab, the burden now falls heavily on groundwater reserves.

Pre-monsoon showers are also particularly vital for crops such as spring maize, moong, and sunflower, which precede paddy cultivation and spring maize rely heavily on adequate irrigation.
