With the barricading on Punjab-Haryana borders following the ‘Dilli Chalo’ call by various farmer unions affecting general commuters, Punjab’s industry has sent a message to the farmer unions, expressing support for them but stressing on the need to consider Punjab’s economy and industry.
In a letter to Sarvan Singh Pandher, coordinator of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), Badish Jindal, president of All Industries Trade Forum (AITF), stated, “During the Kisan agitation against farm laws from November 26, 2020, to December 9, 2021, Punjab’s industry fully supported the farmers.” Jindal added, “While we supported the protest, we faced losses due tolonger routes for raw materials, increased expenses, and clients avoiding Punjab. Please consider Punjab’s interests during protests and ensure they don’t disrupt daily life.”
Jindal emphasized, “We fully support your demands, but consider our business and Punjab’s economy. The agitation, caused by the central government’s refusal to address farmers’ demands, is harming Punjabis. We urge you to protest without affecting general life.”
Upkar Singh, president of Chamber of Industrial and Commerce and Undertakings, urged coordination between farmers and industrialists. Singh highlighted, “Farmers need to understand the impact on industry, where many farmers’ sons work. Industry is vital; please protest without disrupting daily life or business.”
It is important to note that farmer union leaders Sarvan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal emphasized that farmers have not blocked roads, attributing it to the Haryana government.
Pandher expressed frustration, stating, “We are being defamed by the union government, portrayed as terrorists, leftists, and accused of political backing. We called ‘Dilli Chalo’ on January 2 at Jantar Mantar, but the government ignored us. If allowed, no one would be affected. Instead, our farmers face opposition from the Haryana government with rubber bullets and tear gas, hindering our movement.”
