Even after a week of paddy transplantation season having begun in Punjab, the public and the industry have been saved from long power cuts this year.
The season started from June 10 and the Powercom is supplying eight-hour regular power to the farm sector. The already-declared power cuts of three hours, with a compulsory day off for industry, however, have not been imposed till now. Besides, the peak load restrictions of upto nine hours, imposed usually during this period, are absent.
Last year, power cuts of upto seven hours were declared and approved by the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission. The actual condition was much worse. Besides, there were numerous incidents of PSEB employees being beaten up and sub-stations being attacked by the public.
Powercom CMD K D Chaudhary said,Even though we have not added a single unit to power generated in the state, this year we have laid special emphasis on better management of power distribution system. It has helped us avoid breakdowns.
With the demand for power hovering around 1,603 lakh units as on today, the Powercom has 1,583 lakh units available. Last year, the demand was around 1,600 LUs but only 1,443 LUs were available with the PSEB and it had to change the timings of its offices, besides that of government offices and schools,to save some power.
