Will apply to both residential and commercial areas of Chandigarh
Chandigarh residents power bills will soon be heavier on the pocket. With the increase in the tariff with effect from May,the arrears of the previous month would be added. The tariff has been hiked in both residential and commercial areas. For domestic consumption,they have been revised from Rs 2.1 per kwh to Rs 2.30 per kwh for the first 150 units. A three-slab system has been introduced from the earlier two-slab system for both domestic and non-residential supply. From 151 units onwards,electricity was priced at Rs 3.80 per kwh. Now from 151 to 400 units,the tariff is Rs 4.20 per kwh,and for above 400 units the tariff is Rs 4.40 per kwh.
In case of non-residential supply,the tariff for the first 150 units would be Rs 4.30 per kwh,it would be Rs 4.50 per kwh for 151 to 400 units and Rs 4.70 kwh for 400 units and above. A new category that of advertisement or neon sign boards has been introduced. The cost would be Rs 6 per kwh. Apart from this,there would be a category of public lighting system. For agricultural purposes,the tariff has been hiked from Rs 2.10 per kwh to Rs 2.30 per kwh. The charges of the previous month would be collected by adding it to the bills in the coming months.
JERC had passed the order for revising the tariff on May 7 after a petition was filed by the UT Administration. Prior to passing the order,objections had been invited from residents. A public hearing had also been held in Chandigarh. The UT,in its petition,had sought a hike of 45 to 50 per cent in the power tariff in order to meet its revenue demands.
