A Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) team faced serious opposition from the people of Jhangriyan near Pojewal and its surrounding villages on Monday against a proposed distillery in the town by the son of a senior SAD leader.
The protesters raised slogans against the PPCB team,which had reached the spot to address a ‘ Public Hearing for Environment Clearance meeting,in connection with the distillery. The town residents termed the clearance meeting a mere mockery and accused the pollution board of not making people aware of the project.
Congress leaders including Chaudhary R P Singh,Rajwinder Singh Lucky,Surjit Singh Bhatia ,Prem Chand Bheema and SAD leaders including Chief Parliamentary Secretary,Chaudhary Nand Lal,Darshan Lal Mangupur and Chaudhary Bimal Kumar,also voiced their opposition.
The leaders said that proposed distillery would not only be an environmental hazard to the area but it would also hurt the sentiments of the devotees of the Bhuriwale sect,which had its headquarters situated close to the proposed site.
