Police bust inter-state vehicle theft gang; arrest 5, recover 18 luxury cars 

The accused confessed to stealing vehicles across Punjab and other states. They allegedly bought accidental cars, cut chassis number pieces, tampered with stolen vehicles, and then used original documents to sell them to unsuspecting buyers.

Police in Mohali claimed to have busted an inter-state vehicle theft gang, arrested five of its key members and recovered 18 stolen vehicles, including luxury SUVs and sedans.

Sharing details, Saurav Jindal, PPS, Superintendent of Police (Investigation), Mohali, said that the CIA staff team “exposed the gang” and seized vehicles of different makes, while arresting the five accused.

According to Jindal, on August 18, the CIA team received a tip-off near Ladran Road, Kharar. Acting swiftly, police nabbed Nitesh Sharma, alias Nishu (31), Ranveer Singh, alias Joji (23), and Ramanjot Singh, alias Jot (24), from Airport Road, Mohali. Later, Saraj Anwar Sandhu, alias Raju (32), was arrested on August 21 near Kohinoor Dhaba, Zirakpur, while Shiv Charan Das, alias Shiv Dhaliwal (49), was caught on August 25 from his residence in Dharamkot, Moga.

The accused confessed to stealing vehicles across Punjab and other states. They allegedly bought accidental cars, cut chassis number pieces, tampered with stolen vehicles, and then used original documents to sell them to unsuspecting buyers. Police also recovered a dot machine used for tampering engine and chassis numbers.

The recovered vehicles include — one each of Fortuner, Scorpio, Mahindra XUV500, Verna, Ertiga, Honda City, Bolero; two each of Thar and Swift; three Toyota Glanza; and four Creta.

“The gang also had links with forgers making fake documents and number plates. Raids are ongoing to trace other absconding members and recover more stolen vehicles,” Jindal added.

After completion of police remand, the accused have been sent to judicial custody. The recovered vehicles are being verified with concerned agencies to identify genuine owners or insurance companies before being returned.
