It was mobile phones again which led to the the arrest of four accused who had stolen the tyre of a motorcycle on March 1,from Sector 15.

It was mobile phones again which led to the the arrest of four accused who had stolen the tyre of a motorcycle on March 1,from Sector 15. The accused who seemed to be police officials due to the clothes they were wearing, turned out to be engineering students from Panjab University and other engineering colleges.

After the incident came to light,UT SSP Naunihal Singh constituted a special investigation team (SIT) under DSP,Central,Ashish Kapoor along with Inspector Gurmukh Singh and SI Ajinder Singh to investigate the case.

As per the senior officials, the SIT carried out the investigation “scientifically” and “technical assistance” was taken after scrutinizing the CCTV footage. However, the sources in the UT Police Department revealed that the accused were arrested on the basis of the mobile phones which they were carrying. The time of incident was matched with the mobile phones active in that area and hence the accused were traced and arrested.

The incident took place on March 1 when Anita Thakur,a resident of Sector 15,reported that on the intervening night of February 28 and March 1,two persons apparently in a police uniform had stolen the rear tyre of a motorcycle in-front of her house. The CCTV footage showed that four persons in khakhi coloured clothes stole the tyre of the motorcycle.

Sources in the police department revealed that the accused,Harmanjot Singh,Inderpal Singh,Abhishek Sharma and Manmeet Singh are students of engineering in Panjab University and Chitkara University. “The youngsters are into performing stunts and so they were stealing the tyre for replacing the same in their bikes,” said the source.

As per DSP Ashish Kapoor, the khakhi coloured jackets worn by the two accused and the alleged stolen wheel (with tyre) were recovered by the police.
