Dr Ramesh Kumar Sen,Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery,PGIMER,was awarded the second OASAC oration award at the Biennial Conference of Orthopaedic Surgeons of SAARC countries at Colombo. He was hounoured for his scientific contribution in the management of avascular necrosis (AVN) of hip joints. The award is given to an orthopaedic surgeon from SAARC countries once in two years for academic excellence and scientific contribution. Dr Sen presented his research in management of disease of AVN hip that affects young population usually due to prolonged use of alcohol or steroids. Many youngsters who take drugs for body building also suffer from this disabling condition,which if not treated in time requires hip replacement to restore the ability to walk. Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is the only institute in the SAARC countries that has all the facilities required to manage the disease at all its stages,including stem cell therapy. The therapy was possible due to collaboration with the Department of Regenerative and Translational Medicine and Blood Transfusion Department of PGIMER. Dr Sen,who is a PhD holder in Orthopaedic surgery,has extensive surgical experience in management of pelvi-acetabular injuries and joint replacement surgery. Dr Sen is also the recipient of other Oration awards,including the first ever Golden Jubilee Oration Awards of Indian Orthopaedic Association. He has delivered more than 180 guest lectures on orthopaedics.
