3,514 people frisked and 77 rounded up on suspicion at bus stands in Punjab: Top cop

As many as 3,514 people were frisked at around 249 bus stands across the state and 77 persons were rounded up on suspicion for questioning during cordon and search operations (CASOs) on the occasion of Lohri, the Punjab Police said Monday.

The CASOs were carried out on the directions of Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav from 2 pm to 4 pm simultaneously in all 28 police districts.

Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla, who was monitoring the state-level operation, said all Commissioners of Police (CPs)/ Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) were directed to ensure heavy deployment of the police force under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (SP)-rank officers to make the operation successful.

“Police teams, with the assistance of sniffer dogs, frisked people arriving at and departing from bus stands and also rounded up suspicious people for verification. We had strictly instructed all police personnel to deal with every person in a friendly and polite manner while frisking them during the operation,” Shukla said.

The Special DGP said, “As many as 493 police teams comprising more than 3,500 personnel were deputed to look out for suspicious persons at different bus stands across the state while ensuring minimum inconvenience to the general public.”

“As many as 3,514 people were frisked during the operation conducted at around 249 bus stands in the state and 77 persons were rounded up for questioning. Police teams have also registered three criminal cases during the operation and recovered 950 gm of poppy husk, 70 bottles of illicit liquor and 120 tablets of alprazolam,” The Special DGP added.

He said during the operation, police teams also checked vehicles stationed at and around bus stands. “As many as 318 vehicles were challaned and 17 were impounded,” he added.
