Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal has accused the Chandigarh administration of not fully utilising the revenue generated from the city’s taxpayers and squandering it away by not protesting against the step-motherly treatment meted out by the Union government.

He alleged that every rupee collected as taxes from the people of Chandigarh by the administration goes to consolidated fund of the country. But in terms of allocation, the Union Territory (UT) gets very little.

As a result, both the administration and the Municipal Council are forced to impose additional taxes on the people of Chandigarh to meet the shortfall of revenue, Bansal said, while addressing a press conference on Sunday at Congress Bhawan.

He further said that the door-to-door collection of garbage was started during his tenure, which was meant to make the city the cleanest in the country and to generate employment among the safai sewaks, but the BJP has totally messed up with garbage collection process.

As a result not only the budget allocation for garbage collection had to be increased, but the level of hygiene and sanitation of the city has also declined.
