Relief for students, benefits to teachers, norms for PhD appointments get House approval
For the first time,Panjab Universitys Senate and Syndicate meetings on Tuesday were videographed after there were allegations of tampering of the proceedings of the meet. Vice Chancellor R C Sobti also set up a committee to look into the pros and cons of videographing the interviews for the university and its affiliated colleges.
The meetings also took important decisions that brought relief to students, benefitted the teachers and framed guidelines for appointment of PhDs.
Students with compartments or supplementary will now get a golden chance to clear their examinations in April. The examination fee for it will be decided and declared soon. The fee this year was Rs 10,000 with Rs 800 for each additional subject.
The Senate also decided to extend the last date of submission of thesis and course work for all research scholars to May 31 from December 31. Also, the first year students who were debarred from examinations after they failed to comply with minimum attendance criteria would be exempted from next years entrance examinations for admissions.
There was good news for the teachers too. While all promotions of faculty members under Career Advancement Scheme were approved, enhancement of retirement age of faculty members of the university and its affiliated colleges as well as the non-teaching staff of the university till 65 years of age was recommended.
Besides increase in retirement age,the Regulations Committee also recommended extension of the V-Cs term to five years from the current three with a provision to extend it for another five years as against the present three-year limit.
Meanwhile, the Senate approved appointment of PhD candidates though credit would still be given to NET qualified candidates. The V-C constituted a committee for suggesting changes to point system.
It was also decided that on the basis of compliance of UGC and PU Rules, the affiliated colleges would be graded into three categories. Grade A for colleges with 75 per cent compliance, grade B for 75-50 per cent compliance and grade C for those colleges below 50 per cent.
