Panjab University (PU) has received over 100 objections to the tentative merit list of BCom-I,which was released on July 1. The admissions to this course is centralised and PU is coordinating it. A team has been working to remove all discrepancies and it will declare the final merit list on July 8.
According to official information, objections are related to marks wrongly mentioned by students on their admission forms,non-attachment of character certificates and other documents that led to the problem of students falling under the wrong quota pools.
Moreover, the team making the merit list is also facing problems with regard to the different boards, including Punjab School Education Board (PSEB),Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE),as they have different criteria to assess the Class XII results.
As per rules,85 per cent seats are for city students and 15 per cent seats for others. BCom admission coordinator Prof R K Gupta said,We have received many objections. Though different boards have different criteria to mark papers,we have to adhere to a single formula, while preparing the merit list.
He added that students who have English,Hindi, economics and mathematics combination have 100 per cent marks, while commerce combinations in class XII students have a maximum of 75 per cent marks.
Prof Gupta added that most students failed to attach certain documents,so they were put under different quota pools.
We had already informed the students through internet about the mistakes committed by them and have asked them to rectify. We are receiving students objections and responses as well. After rectifying all the mistakes, the final merit list will have certain changes, he added.
The last date to file objections is July 4. Names of as many as 2,934 students figured in the general category of the merit list. The course offers 2,030 seats, including 1,120 seats in co-education colleges,770 seats in womens colleges and 140 seats in colleges for men.
