‘OPD attendant prescribed tests to Bulbul’

Newborn’s death: Police to submit final report today

In a significant development in the newborn’s death case at GMSH-16,the police on Wednesday said Dharma, the OPD attendant, had been prescribing blood tests to patients visiting the Gynae OPD. Since the rush at the OPD used to be too much on any given day, doctors in the hospital had asked Dharma to prescribe tests to patients on a regular basis. None of the doctors had examined Bulbul, said sources. The police is likely to submit the investigation report on Thursday.

Meanwhile,Bulbul’s husband Chote Lal also confirmed the practice in the hospital. Speaking to Newsline,he said,“When I reached the OPD and requested the woman (he identifies her as Dharma),she wrote something on my medical card and referred me to the blood test counter. Since I could not understand the way and came back to her,she directed me again.”

Sources said Dharma is a regular employee of the hospital for the past many years. She had been prescribing tests to patients and doctors were in the know of it.

Meanwhile,Dharma, who was quizzed by the police, refused to comment on this but added that she did not know anything about the missing OPD medical card.

The revelation has highlighted blatant negligence on part of the hospital authorities. A Class IV employee is not authorised to write any medical tests.

Meanwhile, two other people are also under the scanner. Maya, the security in-charge at the labour ward who allegedly did not let couple meet doctors and directed them toward the gynae enquiry, and lab technician Kanchan, near who’s table the baby was delivered.

The police today reconstructed the entire incident with the help of Chote Lal,who has blamed the hospital staff for the loss of his child.

Meanwhile, authorities are yet to initiate any action against Dharma.

The plea taken by them is that they are waiting for the magisterial inquiry marked by the Health Secretary.

Speaking to Newsline,Medical Superintendent Dr Rajiv Vadera said,“As of now,we have not been directed by the Health Secretary to take any action against anyone. In case anyone is held guilty,we will issue a showcause notice followed by a chargesheet or even dismissal.” The mystery of the missing medical card remains unsolved.

Meanwhile, after allegations that the in-charge of the CCTV footage is the husband of Jasjit Kaur, who made the medical card for Bulbul, the police have decided to send the footage to forensic experts for verification.
