The Panchkula police has stepped up security measures across the district and issued strict regulations on the use of firecrackers to ensure public safety, protect the environment, and maintain peace.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Srishti Gupta said that only green crackers will be permitted in Panchkula on Diwali days — October 20 and 21, between 8 pm and 10 pm. The restrictions have been implemented under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023.

The order strictly bans the manufacture, sale, and use of string crackers (series) and any firecrackers containing barium salts. Temporary licence holders will be allowed to sell firecrackers only in areas designated by the Deputy Commissioner and not from vehicles, shops, or unauthorised stalls. Permanent licences for firecracker sale will not be issued without prior approval of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The DCP emphasised that the use of firecrackers within 100 meters of silence zones, hospitals, schools, courts, and religious places will be strictly prohibited. Additionally, crackers that exceed 125 dB (AI) or 145 dB (C) pk noise levels will not be allowed. Manufacturers must also clearly label the chemical composition of their products and ensure compliance with the standards set by the Department of Explosives.

Any violation of these orders will invite strict legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, the DCP warned.

Police on high alert

Gupta said that in light of the festive season, Panchkula police will remain on full alert from October 18 to 22, with enhanced patrolling and surveillance throughout the district. All ACPs, SHOs, and police post in-charges have been instructed to set up naka points (checkposts) to inspect vehicles and monitor suspicious movements.

Police presence has been intensified in crowded markets, religious places, hotels, dhabas, restaurants, and dharamshalas (rest houses) to prevent any untoward incidents. “All our efforts are aimed at ensuring the safety of the general public and a peaceful environment during the festivals,” the DCP stated.
