The Punjab Police Monday invoked the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against five persons linked to the Amritpal Singh-led Waris Punjab De, according to news agency PTI.

Punjab Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Sukhchain Singh Gill said that efforts were on to nab the Waris Punjab De chief, who is on the run.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has also asked the chiefs of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) to be alert in the border areas as there is a possibility that Amritpal, a declared fugitive, might cross over the International Border in Punjab or via the India-Nepal border.

The police had planned to arrest Amritpal on Saturday, however, he evaded them, leaving his vehicle and mobile phone near Nakodar, according to sources.

According to the PTI report, Gill said that six First Information reports (FIR) have been registered so far and 114 people have been arrested in the crackdown against elements of the pro-Khalistan outfit. Gill also said that police suspect an “ISI angle” and foreign funding in the matter.

The NSA has been invoked against four detainees, namely, Daljit Singh Kalsi, Basant Singh, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala and Bhagwant Singh alias Pardhan Mantri Bajeke, who were all flown to the Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam on Sunday.

The NSA has also been invoked against Harjit Singh, who surrendered on Saturday night in Jalandhar. Harjit Singh, who is the uncle of Amritpal Singh, will also be taken to Dibrugarh Central Jail, according to the police.

The Punjab police had lodged a case against Singh and other Waris Punjab De functionaries last month, after they barged into the Ajnala police station on February 23, clashed with police, and demanded the release of one of their members, Lovepreet Singh alias Toofan Singh, who was arrested on February 17 in a kidnapping case.

Moreover, Singh has been named in criminal cases pertaining to spreading disharmony, attempting to murder, attacking police officials and creating an obstruction in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.
