What should constitute the food menu in trains?
This has always been a core subject of debate given the diversity of passengers travelling in trains and their distinct food choices. Newsline spoke to a cross-section of people to gauge their opinion on the various initiatives undertaken by the Railways to better the food menu

The poor state of cleanliness discourages people to eat the food served in trains. Also, the food prices in Kalka Shatabdi are on the higher side vis-a-vis the quality. Also, the food options are very limited.

Hygiene should be the prime area of focus for the Railways. There should be regular quality checks conducted to ensure that food standards are maintained. Also, the pantry cars where food is prepared should be monitored on a regular basis. If the Railways cannot improve the quality of food, passengers should be given a choice to not pay for food.

I always make it a point to carry home cooked food. But everybody cannot do the same. The authorities should make attempts at improving the quality and hygiene of food and the improvement must show. Trains are the lifeline for lakhs of people, but unfortunately a majority of them remain unsatisfied with the services.

While there is an option for tea or coffee in Shatabdi available on paper,if somebody asks for coffee instead of tea (which is always served),the attendants invariably refuse saying that coffee is unavailable. Also,no choice is offered on continental or Indian food varieties.

Attar Singh Advocate
The food served in trains is poor on quality. I have traveled in the Himalayan Queen several times and the standard (of food) is either same or on the decline. Passengers even hesitate to order for tea or coffee given the poor state of cleanliness.

While there is nothing exceptional about the food served in most trains,it varies marginally upon the train you are travelling in. The IRCTC requires a facelift and the passengers should help with proper feedback.
