No trace of youth feared drowned in Sirhind canal

More than 24 hours have passed since a 19-year-old boy drowned in Sirhind canal in Rupnagar. The body of the victim is still missing.

More than 24 hours have passed since a 19-year-old boy drowned in Sirhind canal in Rupnagar. The body of the victim is still missing. Rohit Kumar,a resident of Sector 52,had visited Sirhind canal on Sunday to immerse a Ganesha idol. Police said,Kumar who was accompanied by his friends drowned in the 20 feet-deep canal after taking a dive.

With no clues about the victim’s location,the family have blamed the police of being incompassionate about the incident.

Talking to Newsline,brother of the victim Lalit Kumar said,“Police carried out a search to find my brother after he drowned in the canal. However,when his body could not be traced,they refused to carry out another search this morning.”

Rohit drowned around 4 pm on Sunday and a search was carried out by a rescue team. “We are looking for Kumar on our own as the police refused to carry out the search again. Police told us that we should wait for a few days for the body to surface,” Lalit said.

Manvir Singh Bajwa,SHO Rupnagar said,“There is no point in conducting a search again as the flow of the water is very fast and it is difficult to find him now.”

Kumar used to run a shop near his residence. “I am planning to search for my brother’s body again. I will take some friends with me to the canal on Tuesday,” he said.
