Two days after Panjab University (PU) announced the final date for the student elections,the prospective candidates began class campaigning on Thursday,though the authorities have not yet granted permission for the same.
PUSU supporter and a class representative at SD College Sector 32,Chanpreet said,The authorities should have allowed us to start with class campaigning long back. Now as the election dates have been announced,we had to start campaigning.
Authorities in DAV College in Sector 10,where none of the parties have started class campaigning,are quite strict about the rules. SOPU party president Amandeep Singh Bagadia said,We are waiting for the authorities to announce officially that we can go class-to-class for campaigning. We have to file our nominations on August 30,the last date for filing nominations. Teachers will probably allow us then.
Meanwhile,SOPU at DAV College announced Amandeep Singh Bagadia as the presidential candidate and Aman Chehel as vice-president. Candidates for the posts of General Secretary and Joint Secretary will be finalised after submission of nominations.
A student at SGGS College Sector 26,said,We heard teachers have not allowed parties to campaign in classrooms. But on Thursday,most parties managed to enter the classes during free lectures and elaborated their agenda.
NSUI president at the college,Deepak Kundu said,Authorities had strictly asked us not to campaign in the classes but we had to do it. With just few days left for the elections,most of the students will also avoid coming to college. If we dont inform them individually how will they know our partys agenda.
Student unions in the Government College Sector 11 also started with the class campaigning on Thursday.
The Hindustan Students Union (HSAA) announced its panel in alliance with three other parties in the college,namely ABVP,HIMSU and SOI,while NSUI at GC-11 made an alliance with PUSU and Himachal Pradesh Students Union (HPSA).
