No hike in PU fees next session

Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti announced today that there would be no fee hike for any student in the coming academic session.

Panjab University (PU) Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti announced today that there would be no fee hike for any student in the coming academic session. After several rounds of meetings and debates, the Vice-Chancellor finally gave his verdict on the issue of fee hike before the University Grants Commission (UGC) team, which is on a three-day visit to PU.

There were several deliberations on the fee hike. The university authorities had been facing strong resentment from the Senate members as well as students on the proposal. The Vice-Chancellor had earlier announced a 5 per cent hike in fees for all first-year students, which he was forced to roll back at the same Senate meeting held at the beginning of this academic session.

Another decision considered to be in favour of students was announced. The 10 per cent annual hike in rentals for commercial shops at the Student Centre would be ploughed back for the benefits of students. Students would be provided subsidised meals and from now on the university would bear 50 per cent cost of students’ insurance. Around 15,000 students are insured on the campus every year.

Confirming these decisions,Dean of Student Welfare Prof Naval Kishore said,“The Vice-Chancellor has announced that there would be no fee hike in the academic session 2011-12. The fee hike is unavoidable in case of deficits. However, with funding from the Central government, the university has come out of the deficit. The issue of hike in rates of food items in the university canteens, which has been opposed by the students, too has been addressed. Meals at subsidised rates would be available to the students.”

The Vice-Chancellor announced that teachers who are willing to undertake research work would be provided facilities and course work at the Centre for IAS and Other Competitive Exams after their teaching hours. According to the recent UGC guidelines, the teaching staff are required to undertake research work.

For this, the teachers had demanded that they be provided leave.
