NIRF 2025: Chandigarh University again bags overall top rank from Punjab; PAU highest ranked state agri varsity
Of these six institutions that made it to the top 100, three are government-owned universities/institutes and three are private. The top three ranks in Punjab have been secured by private universities. All six had made it to the list in 2024 as well.

Six educational institutions from Punjab have figured among top 100 in overall category as per the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2025 released by the Union Ministry of Education, Thursday.
Of these six institutions that made it to the top 100, three are government-owned universities/institutes and three are private. The top three ranks in Punjab have been secured by private universities. All six had made it to the list in 2024 as well.
The Chandigarh University, Mohali, a private establishment, has again emerged as the highest ranked varsity from Punjab in the overall category. It has maintained its overall rank at 32, similar to last year.
The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, has again emerged as the country’s highest ranked state agricultural university. In the overall category, it has ranked 81 among top 100.
In the list of top 100 from Punjab, Chandigarh University (32) is followed by Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET), Patiala (44), Lovely Professional University, Phagwara (49), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar (56), IISER Mohali (70) and PAU Ludhiana (81).
However, except Chandigarh University which has maintained its rank at 32, five others have registered a dip in their rankings compared to 2024. TIET Patiala has slipped by one rank from 43 to 44, LPU from 45 to 49, IIT Ropar from 48 to 56, IISER Mohali from 64 to 70 and PAU Ludhiana from 80 to 81.
The Chandigarh University, Mohali, is owned by Rajya Sabha member and BJP leader Satnam Singh Sandhu.
LPU’s founder-cum-chancellor Ashok Mittal is also a Rajya Sabha member on the nomination of Punjab’s ruling party Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
In 2023, the top spot from Punjab was bagged by the IIT-Ropar, when it had ranked 33. However, it slipped to 48 in 2024 and has further gone down to 56 rank this year.
Four other institutes from Punjab — Central University of Punjab (CUP), Bathinda; Chitkara University, Rajpura; Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jalandhar; and Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Longowal — have been placed in the joint rank band of 101-150.
PAU continues to be highest ranked state agri varsity
The PAU, Ludhiana, has secured the highest rank among the state agricultural universities in the country for the third consecutive year. PAU has been ranked third in the country in “agriculture and allied sectors” institutes category after two central institutes — Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Delhi, at number one and ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (Karnal) at number two. Among state agricultural universities, it is number one in the country.
