A group of men dressed in the distinctive blue Nihang attire of Sikhs allegedly attacked a man with sharp weapons over a financial dispute and killed him in broad daylight in the Patti town of Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Tuesday.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Sammi Puri. They said two other men – Karan Puri and Rajan Puri – were also injured in the attack which took place in Ward No. 6 of Patti.
Family members, who were at the scene, alleged that around noon some people dressed as Nihangs started arguing with Sammi Puri over a financial matter which escalated, and attacked the three men. They took the injured men to Patti Hospital, where Sammi Puri succumbed to injuries, and the others are undergoing treatment.
While claiming that seven men were involved in the attack, the family members demanded strict action from the police against them.
Jaspal Singh, an officer from Patti City Police Station who arrived at the scene, said the attackers had a financial dispute with Sammi Puri over Rs 1.75 lakh. Ashwini Kapoor, SSP, Tarn Taran, also visited the spot, but left when the relatives of those attacked and other residents started protesting against the administration and government.
Earlier this month, a group of Nihang Sikhs attacked Shiv Sena (Punjab) leader Sandeep Thapar with swords on a busy road in Ludhiana leaving him critically injured. The police later arrested two men in connection with the attack on Thapar.
