Beginning their term as members of the Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC),the newly-elected members of the council submitted a written complaint to the vice-chancellor (V-C),Professor Arun Kumar Grover,on Tuesday regarding irregularities in the release of fellowship for research scholars studying in the university.
The council members highlighted that there are hundreds of research scholars in various science, arts and management courses in the university who have not been given their fellowships since November 2012.
The members held PU is credited on the basis of its research and since the university is a leading figure in research along with Delhi University and University of Hyderabad, the authorities needed to infuse enthusiasm among students to maintain that position.
PUCSC president Chandan Rana said,We have informed the vice-chancellor about the issue. If nothing is done within the stipulated time period, then I,along with a senior professor and a representative from FDO office, will give a presentation to the UGC Head Office at Delhi and also the HRD ministry.
PUCSC Secretary,Dr Abha Sharma emphasized,Research scholars are considered to be the backbone of the university. With the on-going research and hostel dues, they should be given their fellowships on time. They cannot bear this burden, both in terms of time and money.
Meanwhile,Rana added that Professor Grover had given a nod to their proposal to start a research loan facility where research scholars could take a loan in the form of monthly salaries.
The V-Cs office will send a proposal to the banks regarding research loans at minimum interest possible. For a good research and academic environment the morale of research scholars needs to be boosted all the time, he added.
