In order to create awareness among students about the urgency of the judicial reforms in India,a paper-reading contest was organised at the moot court in the Department of Laws,Panjab University,Chandigarh on Saturday. Addressing the audience,Avinash Rai Khanna,the Member of Rajya Sabha,who was the key speaker in the valedictory session,said,Judicial reforms can only be successful in India if the role of compromise is duly promoted and recognised.
Anupam Gupta,senior advocate,Punjab and Haryana High Court,in his speech said,The judiciary of India is the largest justice-dispensing body in the world. Those who unreasonably criticise the problem of judicial delays in India are not conversant with the philosophical,legal and sociological dimensions of the machine of justice.
In his address,Prof PS Jaswal,Chairperson,Department of Laws,Panjab University Chandigarh,said,the process of justice rests on different situations and circumstances. If the numbers of judges in different courts are not increased in direct proportion to the increase in the number of cases,the problem of delay and the malfunctioning of the judicial system will continue to stay in India.
Prof Nishtha Jaswal,Dean Student Welfare (Women),opined that it was almost impossible for a poor citizen to invoke the judicial remedies to get proper justice. She said,The judicial system demands transparency and accountability for which the judicial officials have to be the exemplars of high moral integrity.
