Victim Manjit Singh. (Express Photo) A 65-year-old man was stabbed to death with an icepick by two scooter-borne assailants in Kochhar Market area of Ludhiana Monday, police said.
Ludhiana joint commissioner of police Saumya Mishra said the victim, Manjit Singh, a shoe trader, lived in the nearby Model Gram area and had a shop in Karimpura market. He was returning home on his scooter when the incident happened.
Masked assailants attacked him when he stopped at a shop to buy something while returning home around 9pm on Monday.
They tried to snatch a bag containing cash from him and when he resisted, they stabbed him multiple times with an icepick and fled with the bag, police added. The officer said the victim’s family was yet to confirm the amount inside the bag.
Some residents called the victim’s family after the incident and he was rushed to a hospital. However, he was declared dead on arrival at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), police said.
According to an eyewitness, some residents came out of their houses after hearing the noise. When they tried to intervene, the miscreants flashed a gun and threatened them to stay away. The miscreants then snatched the bag and fled.
Meanwhile, the family alleged that even as the incident took place in a bustling market, no one tried to save Manjit or came forward to help him even after the incident. He was struggling to breathe but not even a single person took him to the hospital.
Inspector Neeraj Chaudhary, SHO of division number 5 police station, said that the incident was captured in nearby CCTV cameras but the faces of both attackers were covered.
A case under Section 302 and 34 of IPC has been registered at division number 5 police station on the complaint of the victim’s wife.
