Mohali Mayor Amarjit Singh Jiti Sidhu inaugurated the city’s first bicycle track on Saturday and took a cycle ride on it.
The 2-kilometre track, built for Rs 80 lakh, stretches from Old Spice Chowk on Airport Road to Cheema Light Point, utilising the green belt alongside the road. The project began in 2022 and took three years to complete.
Speaking with The Indian Express, the mayor said, “Approximately Rs 80 lakh have been spent on constructing this dedicated cycle track. It will benefit workers in the nearby industrial area, as this road often sees heavy traffic. The track will offer them a safer route and help prevent accidents.”
“Now, workers in this industrial belt will be able to reach their workplaces safely and on time,” Sidhu added.
Highlighting the potential for expansion, Sidhu said, “Many rear lanes behind houses along the sector-dividing roads have encroachments. We appeal to the public to remove these encroachments so that cycle tracks can be developed as per design.”
He emphasised that promoting cycling would also ease city traffic, reduce parking pressure in market areas, and improve public health. “If people use these tracks, traffic congestion will reduce, market parking lots will see less load, and people’s knees and health will stay in better shape. It’s a win-win for everyone,” he said.
The mayor thanked Sector 57 councillor Kulwant Kaur, her husband and social worker Gurusahib Singh, and Shahi Majra MC Jagdish Singh Jagga for consistently demanding the cycle track.
