With victory margins varying from 120 votes to 2,779 votes, the results of the election were a close call for the political parties in some wards. Each vote counted for the contestants.
The lowest margin was in ward 21 where BJP contestant Heera Negi defeated Congress candidate Indu Singla by 120 votes. In some of the wards, the margins were less than 200. These included wards 8 where Gurbax Rawat of the Congress won by a margin of 148 votes from her nearest rival Inderjeet Kaur of the Shiromani Akali Dal. In ward 16 Rajesh Gupta defeated H S Lucky by a margin of 193 votes. This was less than when the two had contested in the last election. In 2006,Gupta had defeated Lucky by a margin of 381 votes.
In ward 22,Davesh Moudgil defeated Jatinder Bhatia by 255 votes. Bhatia had won the last election by 972 votes. There are three wards where the victory margins exceeded 2000 votes. These were wards 3,14 and 11. From all three Congress candidates have won the elections. These include Pardep Chhabra,Rana Kashmiri Devi and Darshan Garg. Anu Chatrath of the Congress who had won the last election by a margin of 1583 votes lost by 792 votes this time. Similar is the case with Devinder Singh Babla. Having won the last election by the highest margin of 3758 votes,he lost this time by a margin of 919 votes.
Senior party leaders state that a loss is a loss even by the thinnest margin. However, areas where the victory margins were very narrow need introspection to ascertain the reasons.
