Manpreet’s support base swells online

“Thank you for your overwhelming support,we have now maxed the number allowed as friends on Facebook at 5,000…” posted Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s beleaguered nephew Manpreet Badal on his wall on the social networking website on Wednesday.

The ousted finance and planning minister of Punjab may no longer enjoy support from the state’s “first family” and the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD),but his support is swelling online.

With his ouster from the Punjab cabinet and expulsion from the party,Manpreet has also changed his profile picture. In place of his old photograph,in which he was shown sitting in his office swarmed with files, his present account profile shows a close-up.

As the 48-year-old expelled MLA thanked his friends for their support, his Facebook wall was flooded with posts from his friends, venting ire against the Badals and the SAD,and particularly the Akali MLA,Sant Ajit Singh, who switched sides on Tuesday.

From “don’t join Congress” to “launch own party”,Manpreet’s Facebook friends equated father-son Badal duo with the Mahabharata characters of Dhritrashtra and Duryodhan, and dubbed SAD as “very SAD DAL”.

Citing example of how Rajshekhar Reddy succeeded Chander Babu Naidu in Andhra Pradesh, the Doon alumnus’ one of the “online” friends,Pardeep Kalia, wrote: “Naidu remained a successful CM,but Reddy went house to house to highlight where he lacked and the people gave a chance to Reddy… You have to say bad to bad people only… rest your caliber is much more than Reddy…”

Detaching “Sant” from the name of MLA Ajit Singh,Shamsher Singh Brar posted: “I would be unable to apply Sant in the name of Mr Ajit Singh… Once again best wishes for Sant Manpreet Singh Badal.”

Extending support,Amardeep Chahal wrote: “Don’t compromise on your stand and perceptions, you may be left alone in this cruel world of politics but its your stance that will define you in books of history…” (SIC)

“Mahabharata had proved that son lust is a disease,” felt Arjun Sharma.

On touching the maximum number of friends,Gurpreet Toor posted: “Ok,now we are 5,001,with 5,000 friends and one Manpreet Badal… Let us see how we can change our Punjab and our India for good.”
