An hour after cremating his mother, who passed away Saturday morning, Ravinder Kumar and his family members, residents of Bapu Dham, came to cast their vote at his respective polling station.

As Ravinder was grieving over his mother’s demise, his cousin told him that he must cast his vote. Ravinder works with the Higher education department in Haryana.

His two daughters, Sheetal and Shilpi, first-time voters, also cast their votes.

Ravinder said his mother Kaanta, 78, too, had the plan to cast her vote along with the family this morning, but fate decided otherwise.

The family had decided to cast their votes at 7 am as their both daughters were excited to vote for the first time, but Kaanta felt unwell.

“My mother was unusually silent for the past three days but she had planned to cast her vote. Our polling station is in Sector 26 itself. But she began feeling unwell and passed away by 9 am,” Ravinder said.

“We performed her last rites at the housing board cremation ground by 4 pm, then I visited my cousin’s place. Lalit told me that he would take the two daughters to cast their votes, and then I would go with him. He insisted we should vote. It’s an important day,” Ravinder added.

Ravinder said everyone, including the people queued up, was so understanding that the moment his brother told them that “my mother has passed away, policemen allowed us to cast our votes”.
