Ludhiana: Joint team snaps sewer connection of ‘polluting’ dyeing unit

Ludhiana civic body Superintending Engineer (SE), Ravinder Garg, and Executive Engineer, Ranbir Singh, said that dyeing unit had come under their lens when a joint team — led by civic body’s SDO Kamal and PPCB SDO GS Channa — were conducting inspections in Focal Point area to check dumping of untreated waste in civic body sewer lines on Thursday night.

The samples of the untreated waste were collected from the sewer lines and the dyeing unit in the presence of PPCB officials. Executive Engineer Ranbir Singh later stated that apart from snapping the sewer connection on Friday, the municipal corporation has also made a recommendation to PPCB for taking legal action against the unit.

Garg stated that Thursday’s inspection was carried out under direction of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation commissioner, Dr Shena Aggarwal, as part of the drill of checking dumping of untreated waste of dyeing units in sewer lines. Separate Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) have been set up in the city for treating dyeing industry waste and the waste of dyeing units cannot be dumped in civic body sewer lines, Garg said.
