An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) allegedly died in an "accidental fire" from his service weapon at the house of the Deputy Inspector General, Ludhiana Range, early Tuesday. According to the police, ASI Tirath Singh, 51, a native of Kailpur village under the Dakha sub-division of Ludhiana district, was temporarily posted at the DIG house located on Rani Jhansi Road in the city. His parent cadre was the Ludhiana Rural police. Guriqbal Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, said, “It was an accidental fire”. "He was on a temporary posting at the DIG residence," he added. The Ludhiana police said the statement of the ASI’s wife has been recorded, and she has not blamed anyone for the incident. The incident happened in the jurisdiction of Ludhiana Police's division number 8 police station, and a probe has been initiated. Varinder Singh Khosa, DSP (Dakha), Ludhiana Rural Police, said the deceased officer’s three children live in Canada, and have been informed about his death. ASI Tirath Singh joined the Punjab Police on October 27, 1998.
