An actresss world is one that is fraught with insecurity, betrayal, passion and disillusionment,as she moves between varying degrees of success and failure. Where Did I Leave my Purdah? is the latest production that comes from the creative merger of Lillete Dubey and award-winning playwright Mahesh Dattani. The 90-minute production in English was staged at the Tagore Theatre on Friday, courtesy of the Durga Das Foundation.
The drama spans four decades of an actresses life, telling her story through a tale that is sprinkled with love, passion, denial, humour and grief. Based on the life and times of an actress who saw the world in her art,but ignored the harsh realities of the real world outside,it presents a fascinating account of the world of drama and theatre, moving through different phases of pre- and post-Independence India.
Starring Soni Razdan,Neha Dubey,Sid Makkar,Priyanka Karunakaran, and Dubey herself, the play has a strong musical base and is a telling comment on the contemporary world of cinema and stage.
