Ludhiana Milk Plant Boiler Blast: At least one man died and five others were seriously injured in a high-intensity blast at the Verka milk plant on the Ferozepur road in Ludhiana late Wednesday. The Verka brand is owned by the government’s milk procurement cooperative, Punjab State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (MILKFED).
Sub Inspector Aditya Sharma, Station House Officer of the Sarabha Nagar police station, said the blast, prima facie, occurred in the boiler section of the air heater of the plant late at night. He said six workers were present on the spot who got injured in the explosion.
“One of them, identified as Kunal Jain, was seriously injured. He was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) but succumbed to injuries. Five others are undergoing treatment in other hospitals,” said the SHO.
Jain, 43, was a resident of Haqiqat Nagar, Haibowal area in Ludhiana. He was in incharge of the air heater section of the plant, said SHO.
The five injured have been identified as Ajit Singh, Puneet Kumar, Kulwant Singh, Davinder Singh Lalton and Gurtej Singh, all from Ludhiana.
The SHO said it was being investigated why workers were present in the plant on Vishwakarma Day (October 22), when factories and manufacturing units with machinery usually remain shut. He added that the police are in touch with management authorities, and their statements will be recorded for further action.
Apart from fresh packet milk, the plant manufactures a wide range of fresh dairy products, including paneer, curd, ghee, butter, and sweets.
