It has been eight days since Khushpreet Singh was kidnapped from outside his house in the city. While his family is agitated at the ‘police inaction’,the Chandigarh Police is still groping in the dark. Various agencies of Chandigarh Police including Crime Branch are investigating the case but without any success. Khushi’s step-uncle Sukhwinder Singh has though been questioned by the police,to verify certain points, but to no avail.

The senior officials of the police continue to maintain that the case was very sensitive and therefore no part of the investigation could be divulged.

“What can we do? There is nothing, except waiting. We are cooperating with the police. We are only bothered about the safe return of our child Khushi,” said Naib Singh,Khushi’s uncle.

On the other hand,Lakhbir Singh,Khushi’s father continues to remain unwell and has been put on medication. His step-brother Sukhwinder, only whom the kidnappers contacted from Day 1 and took ransom from, has also been questioned by the police.

Sukhwinder’s phone, which he claimed was taken by the kidnappers alongwith the ransom, was recovered from a park in Sector 33. Ever since the phone was allegedly taken away by the kidnappers, the Chandigarh Police had put the phone’s IMEI number on surveillance. The phone was found being used by a person in Sector 33. When the police caught hold of the person who was using the same handset,he turned out to be a gardner in Sector 33,who told the police that he found the mobile phone, lying abandoned in the garden.

“Suspecting Sukhwinder at this stage means, further agitating the victim’s family members. So far, there is no substantial evidence, which prove that Sukhwinder would be involved in the child’s kidnapping,” said one of the investigating officials.

Various other factors, including the narrow and thickly populated streets of the village, leading to the victim’s house, from where he was kidnapped, also raise doubts on the alleged kidnapping. “It is not that easy for any stray kidnapper to reach the house, kidnap a child and then take him away in daylight, without getting noticed. There are many doubts, which need to be cleared, before reaching any conclusion. We are still working on it,” added another senior police officer.
