Certain startling revelations have come to fore in the investigations pertaining to the death of Karam Singh, former Sarpanch of village Kambopura,Karnal,as the crime branch officials have found that that the deceased was earlier arrested twice in two corruption cases, wherein he had taken money from people to secure them jobs in government departments.
The Indian Express is in possession of copies of two FIRs registered (in 1991 and 1992 ) against Singh with the Karnal Police Station. The FIRs were filed on charges of cheating, criminal intimidation and accepting illegal gratification on behalf of public servants and government functionaries. Interestingly,in the present case also,Singh, before dying had alleged that he took money from his own kins for securing jobs in the Haryana transport department. He claimed to have paid money to Zile Ram Sharma, former chief parliamentary secretary to Haryana government.
In both the cases registered in 1991 and 92,Singh was placed under arrest and charges were framed against him in the court. However, according to the Haryana Police officials,he settled the disputes with people by returning the money to them and managed to evade the conviction in both the cases.
The Haryana Police, during the investigations, found that in the present case also,he took money from people and deposited it in banks, but the money was not withdrawn on the dates,on which Singh had claimed to have paid Zile Ram Sharma.
In both the cases, wherein Singh was arrested and later released on bail,on the instructions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court; the investigations revealed that he duped people by promising them jobs in government departments.
The question, however, remains as to why he wanted to implicate OP Jain and Zile Ram Sharma? We have questioned the duo and are trying to unravel if there was a nexus, said a senior Haryana police officer.
When asked,Karam Singhs son,Rajinder said,There were some cases, but I am not aware of the details,as I was too young at that time.
